ASML Q3 2026 research brief

Built from the three exhibits ASML filed with the SEC on print day — the press release, the investor presentation, and the US GAAP financial statements — plus the Q2 release for the guidance it was measured against. No third-party consensus: every beat or miss below is against ASML's own guidance, and every figure is tied to an exhibit line in the source list.

The quarter in one paragraph

Summary

ASML reported record Q3 2026 total net sales of €11.66 billion, up 55% year over year and 25% from Q2, in the upper half of its €11.0–12.0 billion guidance. Gross margin of 57.5% cleared the top of the 55–57% guided range, lifted by €3.29 billion of Installed Base Management (service and upgrade) sales. Operating income more than doubled to €5.17 billion, a 44.4% operating margin. Net income of €4.96 billion (EPS €12.95) includes a €509.7 million pre-tax, non-cash gain on equity investments. ASML guided Q4 to €14.2–15.2 billion and tightened full-year 2026 to €44–45 billion at a ~56% gross margin. The sentence that matters most: management now expects that supply “as currently planned for both 2027 and 2028 will not fully meet the demand of our customers”, with some customers asking to place orders for 2029 and 2030. The cash-flow statement backs that up: €11.8 billion of operating cash flow in one quarter.

1 · Total net sales — €11.66B

A record quarter, up from €7.52 billion a year ago and €9.33 billion in Q2. System sales rose 51% to €8.37 billion on 121 lithography systems (113 new, 8 used), up from 72 a year ago. ASML had guided €11.0–12.0 billion; the CEO described the result as “towards the high end.”

2 · Gross margin — 57.5%

Half a point above the top of the 55–57% range and up from 51.6% a year ago. Management attributed the beat to Installed Base Management sales of €3.29 billion (+68% YoY), which came in above guidance on “continued strong demand for productivity upgrades.” Upgrades to installed tools are capacity ASML can sell without building a new system.

3 · Operating margin — 44.4%

Operating income of €5.17 billion against €2.47 billion a year earlier. R&D (€1.17B) and SG&A (€0.35B) landed at or below the ~€1.2B and ~€0.4B guided, so nearly all of the extra gross profit fell through. This is the cleaner profit line: it excludes the €509.7 million equity-investment gain that sits in net income.

4 · Operating cash flow — €11.8B

€11.80 billion in a single quarter, versus €0.56 billion in Q3 2025 and €11.49 billion across the previous four quarters combined. €7.0 billion of it came from changes in assets and liabilities. On the balance sheet, non-current contract liabilities (amounts customers have paid or been invoiced ahead of delivery) rose to €9.30 billion from €3.37 billion at year-end.

5 · Q4 guidance — €14.2–15.2B

The midpoint of €14.7 billion would be 51% above Q4 2025's €9.72 billion, with gross margin around 57% and Installed Base Management around €3.7 billion. Full-year 2026 moved to €44–45 billion from €43–45 billion (the bottom was raised), gross margin to ~56% from 54–56%. The implied Q4 is a step up of roughly €3 billion on a record Q3.

Creator hooks

Four ready-to-use openers, each built on a different angle of the quarter.

Hook A · Sold out

The only company that makes EUV lithography machines just said its planned supply for 2027 and 2028 won't meet demand. Some customers want to order for 2030. That sentence is the whole AI capex debate in one line.

Hook B · The cash tells you

ASML generated €11.8 billion of operating cash flow in Q3 — more than the previous four quarters combined. Customers don't prepay for machines they're unsure they need.

Hook C · The China line

China went from 14% to 23% of ASML's system sales in one quarter, while South Korea fell from 43% to 31%. The AI headline hides a big shift in where the machines are going.

Hook D · The memory record

ASML has already sold more lithography to memory makers in 2026 — €10.3 billion through Q3 — than in any full year from 2022 to 2025, per its own chart. If you covered Micron this year, this is the upstream half of the same story.

Quarter over quarter

What changed

Supply language — from “adding capacity” to “not enough”

In July, ASML said it planned to add 30% to its 2026 low-NA EUV capacity (~65 systems) and DUV immersion capacity (~130) for 2027, and was investigating another 30% for 2028. In October it says that plan will not fully meet 2027 and 2028 demand, and it is investigating going beyond 30% for 2028.

Mix — DUV immersion surged, EUV share fell

EUV was 49% of system sales, down from 57% in Q2, even as EUV units rose from 16 to 17. ArFi (DUV immersion) jumped from 29% to 39%, with units up from 23 to 40. Rough math from ASML's rounded slide percentages: ArFi system sales went from ~€1.9B to ~€3.3B quarter over quarter.

Region — China up, South Korea down

By ship-to location, China rose to 23% of system sales from 14%, the USA to 13% from 9%, and Taiwan to 32% from 30%. South Korea fell to 31% from 43%. Japan, at 4% in Q2, no longer appears as a separate slice. China's ~€1.9B (derived) is roughly double Q2's ~€0.9B.

End-use — logic back above half

Logic was 54% of system sales (51% in Q2), memory 46% (49%). Year to date, memory system sales of €10.3 billion already exceed full-year 2025 (€8.4B) and 2024 (€8.6B).

Guidance — range tightened upward

Full-year sales went from €43–45B to €44–45B and gross margin from 54–56% to ~56%. Applying the new range to the €29.76B already booked through Q3 gives an implied Q4 of €14.2–15.2B, consistent with the explicit Q4 guide.

Capital return — buybacks nearly quadrupled

ASML bought back ~€4.1 billion of stock in Q3 (~2.8 million shares), up from ~€1.1 billion in Q2, and paid €0.72 billion in dividends. The next €1.88 interim dividend is payable November 4, 2026. Cash and short-term investments still rose to €12.7B from €7.6B.

The two reads — and the one most people skip

Bull, bear & overlooked

Bull read

  • Demand is ahead of supply for two years. Management's own language: planned 2027 and 2028 supply won't fully meet customer demand, with order interest reaching 2029–2030.
  • Margins beat while volumes ramped. 57.5% gross and 44.4% operating margin in a quarter of record shipments, and Q4 is guided at ~57% gross on higher sales.
  • Upgrades are a second capacity lever. Installed Base Management at €3.29B (+68% YoY) sells productivity on tools already in the field; year to date it already exceeds full-year 2025.

Bear read

  • China's share jumped to 23%. ASML's own risk language flags export controls and restrictions on system shipments; a bigger China slice raises the stakes of any rule change.
  • Net income is flattered. €509.7M of the €5.75B pre-tax income (~9%) is a non-cash gain on equity investments, not lithography.
  • The Q4 bar is steep, and capacity caps the upside. Q4 needs a roughly €3B step-up on a record quarter. If supply is the constraint, beats are limited by what ASML can build, and receivables tripled to €9.25B since year-end.

What everyone might miss

The demand proof is in the cash-flow statement, not the income statement

Headlines will lead with record sales and the “demand exceeds supply” quote. Quotes are cheap; prepayments are not. ASML's €11.8 billion of Q3 operating cash flow exceeded the previous four quarters combined, and non-current contract liabilities — amounts customers have paid or been invoiced ahead of delivery — nearly tripled to €9.3 billion since December.

The angle for a newsletter or thread is not “ASML beat.” It is: “chipmakers are paying for 2027–2028 lithography now.” That turns the AI-capex debate from forecasts into cash already on ASML's balance sheet, and it is the line worth re-checking every quarter.

  1. ASML Q3 2026: record €11.66B sales (+55% YoY), 57.5% gross margin. The headline isn't the beat. It's this line: planned supply for 2027 and 2028 "will not fully meet the demand of our customers." The brief:

  2. vs ASML's own guidance: Sales €11.66B (guide €11.0-12.0B) Gross margin 57.5% (guide 55-57%) Operating margin 44.4% (32.8% a year ago) Net income €4.96B, EPS €12.95

  3. The quote, in full context: Customers keep raising demand forecasts. Some want to place orders for 2029 and even 2030. ASML is now looking at expanding 2028 capacity beyond the +30% it floated in July.

  4. The number most people will skip: €11.8B of operating cash flow in ONE quarter. The previous four quarters combined: €11.5B. Billed ahead of delivery (non-current contract liabilities): €3.4B at year-end, €9.3B now.

  5. The mix shifted: EUV: 57% -> 49% of system sales DUV immersion: 29% -> 39% (units 23 -> 40) China: 14% -> 23% of system sales South Korea: 43% -> 31%

  6. Two caveats: €510M of pre-tax income was a non-cash gain on equity investments. Q4 is guided at €14.2-15.2B, a ~€3B step up on a record quarter. FY26 tightened to €44-45B at ~56% gross margin.

YouTube talking points

Seven talking points, in script order
  • 1 · Open with the quote. “The only company on earth that makes EUV machines just said it can't build enough of them for 2027 or 2028.” Then explain why every advanced chip depends on ASML.
  • 2 · The scorecard vs guidance. €11.66B against €11.0–12.0B; 57.5% against 55–57%. Explain why beating your own guide is the cleanest test there is.
  • 3 · The cash proof. Put €11.8B of quarterly operating cash flow next to the prior four quarters' €11.5B. Walk through what contract liabilities are, in plain language: money billed before machines ship.
  • 4 · The mix chart. EUV 57% → 49%, DUV immersion 29% → 39%. Explain the difference between the two tools, and note that the DUV surge and China's jump landed in the same quarter.
  • 5 · The China slice. 14% → 23% of system sales. Present it as a fact to watch, not a prediction: ASML's filings flag export controls as a risk to shipments.
  • 6 · The fine print. The €509.7M non-cash gain in net income, and why operating income is the better read this quarter.
  • 7 · Close on the Q4 checklist. Can ASML deliver €14.2–15.2B? Does the China share hold? Do contract liabilities keep building? Those three answer whether “sold out” is real.
